First Light
Some rooms ask to be filled. This one asked to be woken. In London, in 2015, we were given a tall, quiet interior that spent its mornings in grey half-light, and the brief was as plain as the room — let the first hour feel like the first hour.
So we worked in gold. Hand-laid leaf, warm at 2700K, faces away from the eye, and the light arrives before the lamp does. The Golden Lights move through the space the way dawn moves across it: a low pendant holding its pool over the table, small discs along the wall keeping the ceiling bright, and one rough-iron flame for the hour when the room wants to be small again.
First light, held
Nothing here raises its voice. The gold catches, the shadow settles, and the room finds morning on its own. We set out to build an installation about beginning. It begins quietly.
