Island Beach Club
Mallorca gives you the sea first and the light second — a glare so flat and white at midday that everything loses its edge. A beach club cut into the rock above the water asked us for something harder to name: a way to keep that glare out of the evening, and to give the terraces a shape once the sun has gone. We started with the dark parts.
Lamps that behave like weather
Along the lowest terrace, the hand-woven Wireform spheres stand out in the open air, their aluminium wire taking the salt and holding a soft, uneven glow. Woven metal lets light out in pieces, so the stone below reads as a field of small bright marks rather than one lit floor. A beach at night wants exactly that. Light arriving, light leaving.
Closer to the bar, Nacre and Ledram do the quieter work at table height. Nacre holds light behind a shell-thin surface and gives it back slowly, so a plate, a glass and a hand all sit in the same soft register. Ledram keeps the line thin — a small disc of light and very little else, set low enough that the sea stays visible behind it. Above all of it we left the ceiling dark. Guests look out, not up.
A beach club runs from early afternoon until late, so nothing here could be tuned once and forgotten. We dimmed low, held the colour warm, and let the rock keep its black. The light belongs to the terraces. The sea keeps the rest.
