Design Days 2023
For three days in June 2023 we stood inside Design Days with a room of our own making. The hall came to us grey and vast, so the first thing we did was take light away. We left the ceiling dark, ran our cabling low along the floor, and set nine pieces where each could keep its own circle of glow. Visitors found their way by instinct: the eye went to the light long before the feet knew where to step.
One long table, one low pendant
In the middle we placed a long oak table and hung our newest pendant low above it, low enough that people had to bend a little to talk across. The shade is copper, hammered by hand, and by the second afternoon the metal had taken on the color of the room: hands on it, breath on it, the evening outside the windows turning blue. Around the table we grouped the smaller forms, the wall pieces with their folded brass and the table lamps whose light escapes only at the rim. Nothing shouted. Everything waited to be looked at closely.
What we remember most are the pauses. A visitor who stood before one wall piece for ten minutes without saying a word. Two architects arguing, kindly, about how a diffuser ought to be seated. A child who asked whether the lamp was warm because it was metal or because someone had made it. We wrote the questions down. Several of them traveled back to the workshop with us, and one changed the way we finished a joint that autumn.
What stayed with us
Three days is a short measure of anything, and yet it rearranged how we think about a lamp meeting a room. A piece behaves differently under exhibition light than it does in a lived-in house, and Design Days gave us the ground in between: a space built for a moment, filled with people who were not yet owners. We came home with dust on the copper, a long list of names we had been asked to write to, and the plain feeling that light is understood best when someone else stands beside you, looking at the same thing.
A lamp is finished when a stranger looks at it for a long time.
