Pleat 49 hangs from a white cable on a white varnished metal base, and everything happens at the shade. We press the fibreglass into narrow pleats and cut the lower edge into uneven fringes. The light leaves straight down through the open bottom, while a thinner part escapes sideways through the frayed rim, and the wall nearby fills with a jagged shadow that shifts whenever the lamp does.

Leaf on the inside

The exterior stays matte white and quiet in daylight. Inside is where the hand work sits: every shade is lined with gold or silver coloured leaf, laid sheet over sheet so no two interiors answer the light in quite the same way. Switched on, the leaf turns the cavity into a soft mirror and pushes the direct beam downward with a warmth a bare bulb never reaches.

Hand-laid leaf, a cut edge, a shadow that refuses to repeat. Form holds the light; the light keeps the form honest.
