Midnight 504
The quiet object
We made Midnight 504 as a single carbon-fibre tube, suspended from the ceiling on a flexible support and pointed down at whatever deserves attention. There is no shade, no diffuser, no ornament between source and surface — only a dark line in the air and a circle of light on the table below. Hang one over a dining table, or a row of them down a long corridor, and the room begins to read the beam rather than the fitting.
The GU10 lamp runs warm at 3000 K with colour rendering above 90, so wood grain, linen and pigment hold the temperature they carry at noon. Because the support flexes, the aim is settled by hand at the last moment; nudge it a few degrees and the light follows. On the 240V build the lamp dims through an IGBT/Triac driver, which lets a bright working surface ease down towards something nearer candlelight.
Each tube is wound and finished by hand, in black to fold into shadow or in white to rest against a pale ceiling. The base and structure are metal, plain and unpolished, made to outlast the fashion around them. We keep the object out of the way. What is left belongs to the light.
